The Baghdad Zoo rakes in some more animals. Unlike rhesus monkeys, patas are not considered desirable for research, and there has been little demand for either from zoos — until now. I am no fan of zoos, especially in an unstable country like Iraq. Tags: zoos baghdad primates.

From Owls in the Family to Wesley the Owl , the narrative in which a human interacts with another species and learns a bit about life along the way has long been a popular and affecting one. This is a pretty good model of the modern environmental ethic of self-restraint and respectful watching.

And quite frankly, I’ve seen some of the most dedicated of ethical birders get excited at finding an owl and get closer than they should. So they may seem oblivious to a lumbering human with camera equipment, but that’s only because hiding is how they try to evade predators. It helps if you can understand owl behavior.

From what I recall, chimpanzees share at least 95 percent of human DNA, although the number that floats around the most is 98.6 If chimpanzees have consciousness, if they are capable of abstractions, do they not have what until now has been described as "human rights"? The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo. Finally, what of the audience?
