On Egypt's Pig Cull

Animal Person

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. But though the pigs weren't originally destined for a mass grave, weren't they destined for slaughter nonetheless?

Roger Cohen Realizes Dogs=Pigs, Sort Of

Animal Person

But it's also remarkable in that Roger Cohen, a 50-something man who writes for the New York Times, wonders: But do pigs have any more or less of a soul than dogs? If you eat meat you cannot logically find it morally or ethically repugnant to eat a particular meat (I’m setting cannibalism aside here.). Or pig, or duck, or fish.

Animal Person

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. Yes, it is hypocritical (speciesism), but who said that we either protect humans or animals? All they do thereafter is replace cows with chickens and pigs and fish. Where do people get that idea? What do you think?

On Cat Killers and Mental Competency

Animal Person

We humans have decided that, for a combination of reasons that are important to us, cats are worthy of our respect. I can't think of another animal so hated by humans that they have actually created an industry to publicize their hatred and their wish to hurt and kill them.
