Pigs Used in Explosives Tests in Britain

Critter News

I wish we could stop killing animals for reasons related to killing humans. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has defended its use of more than 100 pigs in explosive tests in Wiltshire. Some 119 pigs were used in the research at the Government's military research laboratory Porton Down, near Salisbury, between 2006 and 2009. He said 25 pigs were used in 2006, 19 in 2007, 40 in 2008, and 35 in 2009. Tags: UK animal research military pigs

On Egypt's Pig Cull

Animal Person

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. The pigs are being buried alive, dumped in mass graves and "covered in what appears to be quicklime where, they endure a slow and agonising death." But though the pigs weren't originally destined for a mass grave, weren't they destined for slaughter nonetheless?

Egypt Kills Thousands of Pigs for No Reason

The pig you see here being dangled by the leg is still just a baby, and by now he is already dead and thrown away for absolutely no reason, as are the rest of the 300,000 pigs in Egypt. Roger Cohen Realizes Dogs=Pigs, Sort Of

Animal Person

But it's also remarkable in that Roger Cohen, a 50-something man who writes for the New York Times, wonders: But do pigs have any more or less of a soul than dogs? But as Cohen experiences, humans don't live "in theory." The theory that the mind finds inescapably well-formulated is often overwhelmed and overturned by human emotions. Or pig, or duck, or fish. " Dog Days in China " is a small piece with no gruesome slideshow.

It's not as much about what the animal rights activists are saying about how we are raising pigs as opposed to us demonstrating that we do care and we are giving the best possible care" she said. Getting Emotional

Creature Talk

What immediately hit me after getting so emotional about this is how nature is kind in comparison to the horrible cruelties humans impose on non-human animals, especially “food&# animals. That cub probably lived just as long as any pig does on today’s factory farms…and he at least lived his short life FREE. Chickens, turkeys, pigs and other farmed animals get nothing of the sort. I mean, how can a human being be so incredibly heartless?

Eating Eggs is Eating Cruelty

The last thing I want to point out is that Maine’s law does not specify how many hens may be kept in a cage, nor does it specify how chickens should be humanely euthanized. Egg laying hens are arguably the most abused animals on today’s factory farms.

Logically, he admits it does make perfect sense to eat dogs if you eat pigs and cows. Because his previous paragraph is: But do pigs have any more or less of a soul than dogs? It's a bit difficult to take on the soul question for human or nonhuman animals, particularly for an atheist. But the other issues--sentience, suffering, being part of the "mysterious unity of life"--Cohen's own criteria for lumping anyone into one category, are all equally true for humans.

Animals Have Personalities? No WAY!

Animal Person

Riddle me this: Why would any human animal use as a default position that nonhuman animals do not have personalities as rich, distinct, obnoxious, obsequious and varied as human animals? Why is it surprising that nonhuman animals have personalities when human animals do? This is great news for animal rights because it's one more piece of evidence that humans aren't as exceptional as we like to think we are. No one is assigning human traits to nonhumans.

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. Here's an interesting combination of great sentiment and horrible sentiment that involves two responses from the above list: "Online critics said it was hypocritical to protect only dogs and cats, and that the government should focus on human welfare before protecting animals." Yes, it is hypocritical (speciesism), but who said that we either protect humans or animals?

On "The Wild"

Animal Person

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. The animals on farms are created for the sole purpose of human consumption. I can, however, question the motives of a human who has no need to kill a sentient being or have someone kill for him, yet does so anyway.

In other words, horses, like pigs and cows and chickens, are commodities whose worth has a dollar value to people, and we should be doing what we can do maximize that dollar value. Now, mind you there are people who are actually mentally ill in the sense they 'can't get it up' without thinking of their mate as a fantasized non-human animal, I should mention this also includes mythological animals. A reader from Alaska sent the following e-mail, with his name, a nickname and phone number, and this is indeed a serious comment.

At issue was whether federal regulations dealing with inspection of domesticated animals about to be killed, processed, and sold for human consumption preempted -- or nullified -- California Penal Code 599f. Clearly a win for the damn livestock industry. It was a question of federal vs. state authority. Sucks.
