The end of August, which often seems synonymous with the end of summer, evokes an entire spectrum of emotion, from sweet to bitter. This weekend, I thrilled to the wail of an Eastern Screech Owl in my neighbor’s yard; maybe I should become better friends with those neighbors in case the owl returns.

Smith’s Longspurs, Vermillion Flycatchers, Burrowing Owls, Long-billed Curlews, Virginia Rails, Black Terns, Crested Caracaras–there’s a bird here for every taste. Marybeth and Lynn chase birds familiar and unfamiliar to me, a Northeastern birder, and I’m sure it will be the same for any reader in North America.

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls will also sometimes do so.). You truly cannot experience the Gray-barred Wren without hearing the raucous calls shared among group members of this highly-social species. That emotional connection earned it my #2 spot. It is, or at least was, a true “trash bird” there.

As I explained to my nephews when they were younger, “The Burrowing Owls don’t think we’re their friends. People on one side of the rope, owls on the other.” Substitute Snowy Owl here if you’d like the modern version). Perhaps it comes from keeping a conscious distance while I observe them.

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner.

There are owls in New York City. Big owls: Barred Owls on Riverside Drive and down the path from Harlem Meer, a Great Horned Owl in Central Park’s Ramble. The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. But–is that it?
