Pink Pigeons were featured on episode four of the second season of The Zoo , the excellent television series about The Bronx Zoo,* and their story was disturbing. This description appears to be an overstatement though, because we learn by the end of the episode that The Stud and Serendipity have not produced one viable egg.

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. There is a bit of science news. The new rankings will be used in a major conservation initiative called the Edge of Existence program at the London Zoo. All I see are their buts. But that’s not the most interesting thing I’ve seen recently.

It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” .” I sometimes try this at parties, and indeed it usually works quite well.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. This bit of science is a nice final counterpoint to an account that has emphasized art, history, and literature. How many eggs did a pigeon lay?
