The Gray Crowned-Crane is a new addition to the list of the world’s Endangered species, creeping up a category from Vulnerable.

Pink Pigeons were featured on episode four of the second season of The Zoo , the excellent television series about The Bronx Zoo,* and their story was disturbing. Basically, this species is so dimwitted, it doesn’t know how to survive. And, The Stud only produced one last year before being sent to time out for sexual harassment.

Gisela Kaplan has written a book about the species, and how they seem unperturbed by humans: “It’s one of their most successful defense strategies. It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. They just sit and pretend not to be there to avoid interaction.” The Willie Wagtail is not really a wagtail but rather a fantail.

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. The birds were too far away to identify, and I know more than one species does this, but if I had to guess they were starlings. There is a bit of science news. But if half of the species of goatsuckers go extinct, you’ve got a lot less left.

It is the 100th Anniversary of the extinction of the species known as the Passenger Pigeon and writers are paying attention. We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. We have a lot of source material.
