Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections.

Pink Pigeons were featured on episode four of the second season of The Zoo , the excellent television series about The Bronx Zoo,* and their story was disturbing. This description appears to be an overstatement though, because we learn by the end of the episode that The Stud and Serendipity have not produced one viable egg.

Gisela Kaplan has written a book about the species, and how they seem unperturbed by humans: “It’s one of their most successful defense strategies. It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. They just sit and pretend not to be there to avoid interaction.” Just please do not return to this website afterward.

The local Bald Eagles are getting busy, I suspect there is an egg in the nest. There is a bit of science news. The new rankings will be used in a major conservation initiative called the Edge of Existence program at the London Zoo. All I see are their buts. But that’s not the most interesting thing I’ve seen recently.

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. We immediately get a sense of the pigeons’ abundance, beauty, and danger to human activity. How many eggs did a pigeon lay? We have a lot of source material.

More than 150 bird species are known to have become extinct over the past 500 years, and many more are estimated to have been driven to extinction before they became known to science. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.
