Take a medium-sized stork, then imagine placing a fried egg over each of its eyes. Color the white of the egg yellow and the yellow of the egg dark red, and you get a close approximation of what Storm’s Stork looks like. Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. With so much to look at, you wouldn’t think my eyes would be drawn to a pine cone nest on the ground, complete with a Canada Goose parent shielding her delicate eggs from the nearby antelope species. Had they merely hatched?

Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections.

It is a bit worrying that while the Basel Zoo is listed by Google as having a page on the Red-tailed Laughingthrush , that page itself does not seem to exist anymore, and the species is not listed among the inhabitants of the aviary of the zoo. His obituary was published in Nature. ” ( source ).

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds.

Pink Pigeons were featured on episode four of the second season of The Zoo , the excellent television series about The Bronx Zoo,* and their story was disturbing. This description appears to be an overstatement though, because we learn by the end of the episode that The Stud and Serendipity have not produced one viable egg.
