Stuck in the middle (of the AOU/COS meeting)

Some lingered to gaze at samples from the Field’s collection of bird specimens, such as perfectly preserved thrushes, warblers, and even a Rose-breasted Grosbeak under glass. Other hardy souls signed up for an early morning “Ostrich Run” 5k, with the prizes beinging–you guessed it–actual ostrich eggs.

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. I queried for birds and mammals living in the new world (but excluding sea birds) outside of the tropics (which includes a lot of tropical migratory birds, obviously) an a similar sample of mammals. This is not a surprise.
