But, I couldn’t help wonder why there is such a range of illustration. The richer, more interesting plates are recent work, reflecting Karen Phillipps development as a nature illustrator.

I queried for birds and mammals living in the new world (but excluding sea birds) outside of the tropics (which includes a lot of tropical migratory birds, obviously) an a similar sample of mammals. There are 200 animals in each sample, and I presume that this is a random subset of the larger sample of over 400 or so in each category.

Read what you want about the origin of domestic cats; the genetic evidence is not properly sampled. It is probably true that there is a near 100% overlap in the rodents and other small terrestrial animals, as well as ground bird eggs, eaten by Coyotes and feral Cats. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats.

Alternatively, imagine I set the dial to produce simple heat, like the kind that comes out of your stove to cook your scrambled eggs. I can’t help wondering if the conspicuousness of the bird I saw was an attempt to draw attention to itself to distract the Grey Warbler while the other laid her eggs. In the open! With my camera!
