So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.

But as far as I can tell, nobody advocates for birders, so lands are opened to hunting and fishing , but not birding, photography, and other non-consumptive uses. Until now, it has only been open for hunters. This is the sort of issue that the ABA should have a template for comments that could be adapted for a specific site.

There were reasons to think that the White-winged Guan had been extirpated by over-hunting. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape. This is a very small number of birds in a small area.

The whistling duck call carries with it the crimes of big business, the failures of governments and the ignorance of irresponsible hunters. The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others.

This almost certainly can be argued to be true just on the basis of logic, because feral Cats are proficient hunters and are entirely out of ecological place. a study at Ohio State University shows that coyotes keep down the cat population in the more natural urban/suburban areas in two ways — meals of cat and cat education.

We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed. Whilst in Atewa Range Forest Reserve, a hunter passed us deep in the forest and I asked him to show us his night’s catch.

Hunting: You may have noticed that the Written Species Accounts include a section on hunting. I am a city girl and until I became a birder my contact with hunting was limited to occasionally seeing dead deer on the tops of cars in upstate New York. So–not a fan of hunting. I was really taken aback when I saw this.
