Those who are familiar with my ethos know quite well that I am very much for the experience as opposed to the payoff. Some call it a preference for the journey rather than the destination. Nomenclature aside, few can deny the benefits of simply being in nature, when there are birds around that’s a bonus! I have been most fortunate to spend all my life thus far as an island creature, never far away from the ocean.

I see myself as an old school birder, which means that I do remember the times when good bird photos were rare and far in between, and the times when bird paintings were getting ever more impressive. Yes, I do prefer paintings, among other reasons, for the sheer aesthetic pleasure of enjoying a particular artist’s style. Yet, there is one group of birds where even I prefer photographs: gulls.

The reason to come to Eshowe as a birder is to see Dhlinza Forest, a subtropical forest important for its biodiversity. The Dhlinza Forest has a boardwalk stretching 125 metres through the forest understory to a 20 metre high viewing platform. As usual, my experience with such boardwalks was somewhat underwhelming, as was Eshowe as a whole, but there were still a few birds worth mentioning at the forest and in the area surrounding Eshowe.

We are currently in the Wet Season in Broome and we have had plenty of rain already this year and there is more to come. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to check the Main Roads Travel Map before you consider travelling around Western Australia at the moment. Many roads are closed and many won’t be reopened in the foreseeable future.
