February 2023 was a slow month for birding in Shanghai, at least for me – so slow that I almost put the Spotted Dove , possibly my least favorite bird here, on the cover. But then, sanity (or maybe respect for you, the reader) prevailed. Not a cover species The Black Kite is not actually black, but of course, misleading bird names are not exactly rare.

Regulators and legislators are showing greater interest in xylazine, a prescription drug used in multiple sectors of clinical veterinary medicine, that is increasingly showing up in street drugs. The Food and Drug Administration announced that the agency has taken action to restrict xylazine from coming illegally into the country, while members of Congress are considering scheduling xylazine as a controlled substance.

Cedar Waxwings have come back to central Mexico. Most years, there are no more than a few dozen reports of this species across the region. But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. This year, the sightings are less, so far. (I have seen exactly one Waxwing this year.

With our continued travel restrictions due to the floodwater damage done to our highways and the destruction of the Fitzroy Crossing bridge we are still enjoying our local bird-life. However, birds that would not normally be local have arrived from the north following all of the wet weather. In 2017 we found a lone Pied Heron that had wandered south and then in 2018 more Pied Herons arrived after a decent amount of rain and included a rufous morph bird amongst the flock.
