A Red-tailed Hawk with a Very Bad Idea

10,000 Birds

Pro-tip: If you are a Red-tailed Hawk don’t attack a Bald Eagle on its nest. Such an idea when put into practice will not end well for you.

Ted Williams Back at National Audubon Society!

10,000 Birds

Now this is some seriously good news ! Or, in Ted’s words: I’ve just been informed by Audubon that I am benched for the next issue but will be permanently back in the game the following issue. I knew I had fans out there, but never imagined there were so many and with such strong feelings. Your support went as viral as the emails from Alley Cat Allies.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of March 2013

10,000 Birds

Keep your eyes to the skies for fun celestial bodies! (Did you see Pan-Starrs? Clare Kines spotted the charismatic comet above Admiralty Inlet in Nunavut!). Spring is here! I know this not from the gradual appearance of robins, grackles, and blackbirds around me, but rather from the fact that our local schools are about to embark on spring break. Party!

IATB theme: I want Robins, of all kinds

10,000 Birds

Robins are one of those taxonomically confusing terms, like bunting or grosbeak or warbler, that are applied to groups of birds in different, often disparate, families. In the New World, the birds we call “robins” are deep-bellied, melodious-voiced, thrushes of the genus Turdus. In the Old World, they’re little, roundish, chats (another of those odd terms).

With Ears Wide Open

10,000 Birds

This week, the future is being heard and not seen. I pass over the bridge on my way to class and a Song Sparrow is starting to defend a clump of bushes along the river. The Black-capped Chickadees have been adjusting their songs for weeks; now they are well-practiced and ready to get on with the business of breeding. I lie awake at one in the morning and a Killdeer cries somewhere in the dark.

Long-eared Owl in Queens!

10,000 Birds

On my amazingly slow slog to 300 species in Queens there are some birds that I just can’t believe that I had never seen in my home borough. Long-eared Owl was not one of them. Enigmatic, reclusive, and camouflaged are three adjectives that work especially well with Long-eared Owl. Add to that the fact that only two Long-eared Owls have been reported to eBird in Queens since 1990 and you can see why the fact that Asio otus has eluded me in New York City’s finest borough is not shockin

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of March 2013)

10,000 Birds

March Madness is sweeping the American sports scene while the rest of the populace here tries to figure out when spring will really, truly arrive. The insanity of March Madness makes me wonder if any other country has a comparable phenomenon, meaning an annual event or period where college sports dominate discussion. Can anyone share a similar scenario?

First Phoebe of 2013

10,000 Birds

I finally saw my first Eastern Phoebe of 2013 yesterday at Hempstead Lake State Park on Long Island. In fact, I saw three! My first sighting of Sayornis phoebe is always a harbinger of spring for me and this one was especially sweet as harbingers of spring have been noticeably absent this year across much of the northern United States. So, like last year, I thought I would ask the question, which is only really relevant to folks in the midwest and northeast of the United States and in eastern Can

Road to La Union for Choco Endemics

10,000 Birds

Emerald Tanager. The north-western slopes of Ecuador are home of many Choco Endemics such as Choco Warbler, Stripped-billed Aracari, Black-tipped Cotinga, Emerald Tanager, Scarlet-browed Tanager, Scarlet-and-white-Tanager, Gray-mantled-Wren, and many other. Most of these birds can only be seen in this northern region of Ecuador. One of the truly amazing areas for these endemic birds is a road that leads to remote towns where the AWA indigenous people live.

Look, up in the sky, it’s…

10,000 Birds

I’ll be honest with you. I’ve got nothing for you bird wise this month. I could give you yet another ode to Ravens (which I love dearly), or tell you about how I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of Snow Buntings some time in the next month, but quite frankly I’m tired of trying to rework those themes. And I know all you’ve gotten from me lately is mammals, but I’ve been more tuned to the skies and surely you’re tired of bunny goodness this close to Easter

Car Birding: A Birder Litmus Test

10,000 Birds

A Dusky Grouse scurries across the road in Grand Teton National Park, WY. I was reading Carrie’s post last month and got to thinking about car birding in general. Personally, I am a big fan of car birding, despite the necessary fossil fuel burning that is involved. That not-insignificant-caveat aside, I think it has a lot to offer. For many birders, the thought of car birding is as natural as using a field guide.

County Listing Map

10,000 Birds

This is a very quick post to show what can be done when you are an eBird obsessive with a bit of spare time on your hands. Yes, I took the time to look at my county totals for every county that I have ever eBirded and used a map I found on Wikipedia to color code my counties according to how many species I have seen in each. I used the following color codes: 300+ species – Red. 250 – 299 – Orange. 200 – 249 – Yellow. 150 – 199 – Green. 100 – 149 &#

Arthur’s Pass

I’m off to South Island this weekend for a visit to my favourite destination, Kaikoura ! To celebrate, here are some shots of something not remotely albatross related, Arthur’s Pass. Keen readers of the blog will remember that Arthur’s Pass is where I saw numerous tricksy Kea late last year, but the area has more than just Kea. It is one of the more beautiful areas of New Zealand, hardly an area that lacks beautiful spots.

The Fate of the Florida Anis

10,000 Birds

Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani ) is a widespread and ubiquitous bird in disturbed grassy areas throughout much of the neotropics, including most of the Caribbean Islands. It is one of three species of ani ( Groove-billed and Greater Anis are the other two) and together form a unique branch in the cuckoo family. Incredibly social, Smooth-billed Anis form monogamous pairs that build a communal nest where all birds share in the responsibilities of feeding and tending to the young.
