Calling All Birders: Come To Hog Island!

The first time I saw a puffin, it was a revelation. En route, the teenagers were chatting away when suddenly I screamed “Eagles!”, Bald Eagles ,” I said encouragingly/defensively/lamely. But just for a second, I became a heretic: wasn’t there an injured puffin around somewhere, I thought hopefully, who needed my help?

Birding the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders. We didn’t even need binoculars to enjoy the puffins – they were close enough to be marveled at naked-eye! Happy puffins.

Jumping out of my “Beat” today

The upside for me, not to take away from my day with 27 different bears, was the next 6 days all by myself on Kodiak Island, recording as many new bird species as I could find. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin. All in all, I add 17 new species to my Life List, not even a quarter of what I had hoped for.

Week 21: Our last week in Scotland

At Dunnet Head, we got to see a couple of Atlantic Puffins, a few Razorbills, some Guillemots and gulls. Hundreds of Black-headed Gulls, Greater Black-backed Gulls , Mew Gulls , and Fulmars , thousands of Razorbills , 60-70 Puffins , and literally tens of thousands of Guillemots. The show stopper was his Eagle-owl.

My eBird 10th Anniversary

During the decade, I submitted 1,219 checklists and observed 555 bird species, all in the U.S. After an initial period when all species are new, the lifers begin to follow a pattern. Thus, I can pinpoint my first pelagic trip, as it added 13 new species. For example, I’ve seen Bald Eagles in 15 states. and Canada.

Birding Iceland on the Fly

The hotel owner told us that visiting them in the evening had the best showing of puffins as they returned to the cliffs from the sea. Hundreds of birds all huddled closely together, dangling from the jagged ledges, seemingly separated by species in separate levels along the cliff. The cliffs are a newbie photographer’s dream.
