Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. Common Mynas, Australian Ravens, Rainbow Lorikeets, Red Wattlebirds, Australian Magpies, Magpie-Larks, Willie Wagtails and Welcome Swallows were present in the parklands. White-bellied Sea Eagle.

As I moved in on a heavily camouflaged Crimson Rosella hoping to improve on the photo from the last visit I observed a glimpse of a Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring by through the trees. The White-naped Honeyeaters were still present in the area and the White-browed Scrubwrens were busy flitting between the bushes in the undergrowth.

They lurk ever-present in our sub-concious as sacred items on an unobtainable, yet highly desirable, list. We also stumbled upon the largest of Africa’s owls, the colossal Giant Eagle Owl (more recently named Verreaux’s Eagle Owl ) and often heard its pig-like grunting both during the day and at night.

The tiercels (young Peregrines) must deal with Golden Eagles, Ravens, adult Peregrines, and foxes; they must also learn to navigate the skies and make their own kills, luckily these skills appear to be innately learned. It’s presented here from a different perspective, both more personal and more scientific (those footnotes!).

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. View from the bird hide The main species present when we visited were Black-winged Stilt, Black Swan, Silver Gulls, Chestnut Teal and Black-fronted Dotterels.

On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. It was an incredible time on the road and one which I will expand on over coming weeks. Red Kangaroos.
