In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. Rehabilitators also cooperate with law enforcement on illegal activity, and even monitor emerging diseases in avian species. He lay in a ditch with a spinal injury, unable to move.

How To Help A Baby Bird

It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Young raptors like the above Bald Eagle chick are a different matter. If you find a young hawk or eagle out of the nest and it is covered in down and is unable to stand on its huge feet, it needs to get back in the nest. Leave it be.

This ruled out some excellent species like Cape Eagle Owl, Violet Wood-hoopoe, African Finfoot and Half-collared Kingfisher and I was still left with 36 species. Initially I came up with a list of 64 favorite birds, certainly not a Top 10, and no matter how hard I tried I could not whittle this down further.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.
