Birdwise, it turned out to be a good one and my year list was almost 400 species long, which made me happy… almost. Lesser White-fronted Goose and Greater Spotted Eagle came to mind, but what else? I am scoping Great Cormorants roosting in their colony in the (now dry) flooded forest, there is one… eagle to the right of them.

In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. A personal encounter with a wild species changes one’s perspective. As our population grows, so do the challenges we create for native avian species that coexist with us.

How To Help A Baby Bird

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Young raptors like the above Bald Eagle chick are a different matter. Owls are a little different. Leave it be.

This ruled out some excellent species like Cape Eagle Owl, Violet Wood-hoopoe, African Finfoot and Half-collared Kingfisher and I was still left with 36 species. This was tough because this excluded species that occur in two countries within South Africa’s geographical area, Lesotho and Swaziland.
