Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over.

Peregrine Falcon is certainly more elegant than Duck Hawk. And the use of Long-tailed Duck for a waterfowl whose traditional name I decline to type is a small, but real, improvement in the state of civilization as a whole. Also known as Meat-bird, Moosebird, and Lumberjack. Issues like taxonomy take the back seat.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
