The National Wildlife Refuge system is one of America’s greatest treasures. It preserves habitat, protects wildlife. and provides diverse nature experiences for visitors from around the world. Due to some erroneous numbers thrown about by Duck Stamp advocates, I feel that some explanations are in order.

Turns out, Monday brought more than a little rain, and we got soaked as we explored the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge along the ocean. Our last and final stop was the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, one of my favorite birding spots. Maritime forest. Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. I had enough time to warn my husband that it was headed our way and we ducked. I was a bit sad, too, that we had annoyed the owl enough that it felt it had to strafe us … my normal MO is to avoid stressing out wildlife.
