Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. I am curious to see whatever awaits us in the Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Among teak and bamboo thickets, a winding forest road takes us deeper into the enchanted Snake Jungle, but alas, not a Tiger in sight. We are observing a Dhole , also called Asiatic or Indian Wild Dog.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. In my opinion dogs would be the first to go. Although I love dogs they're too dependent on humans, it's true that stray/feral dogs can form packs and survive in the wild a regular dog like a golden retriever would get eaten by a lion instantly. Cats would be the next. The main strategy for horses is organisation.

A tin yellow tiger is staring at us from the Melghat Tiger Reserve gates, as the narrow tarmac road winds through teak forest ( Tectona grandis ) along the hillside. From the next curve in the road, I can see the cows grazing deep in the valley: “If I was a tiger, I would check my prey from here.”
