Since it’s really hard to type in a splint, here is a blast from the past: specifically from the beginning of this long, strange trip, my cross-country journey from New York to Montana: I have to confess, I had forgotten all about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I wasn’t thinking about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow at all, though.

Great Grassland Birds at Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge

One of those spots, Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge in Ulster County, was hosting a couple really cool birds for New York State so I was eagerly anticipating stopping in to see them. And then, only a few yards away, a Henslow’s Sparrow was found singing as well. Bobolinks are among the best of the icterids.

Week 31: Visits to Hart Mountain, Malheur and the surrounding areas.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge.

Less(er Goldfinch) is More

To deal less in lofty generalities, a few days after I finally saw the Baikal Teal I went birding on my usual, casual route along the riverfront trail near my apartment, accompanied only by my dog.
