In Australia we definitely have our fair share of invasive species and the main problem is that we are such a huge land mass with such a small population. The population of Australia is concentrated mainly around the city areas along the coast and many invasive species have been able to spread with ease.

When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

Motomco’s Material Safety Data Sheet for “Hawk” warns that the product “is extremely toxic to fish, birds, and other wildlife” and that “dogs and predatory and scavenging mammals and birds might be poisoned if they feed upon animals that have eaten this bait.” Motomco also makes “Jaguar” and “Tomcat,” complete with cat icons, of course.

Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

We lose a handful of species, mostly waders flying across the whole Pacific but also a cuckoo flying just half of it. The more rural shoot pigs, deer and ducks. There is some speculation that they do fine on the island but don’t last long off the island, which would be a bad thing for a species as prone to wandering as this one.

This species is found on the African continent, in Angola, as well as central, eastern, and southern Africa. Many tarantula species have a special kind of setae, known as urticating hairs , that serve as a defensive weapon. The chimpanzee and the bonobo are the only species in the genus Pan.

There has been a great deal of talk these days about “reviving” extinct species. Setting aside the feasibility of extracting DNA from specimens and fossils, and finding a suitable similar species to donate an egg, there is much debate on whether we should bring back those species we’ve lost. Should it be?
