American Dog Rescue has a generous donor who is willing to give $1 to Missouri animal tornado victims for every Facebook fan up to $10,000. Benjamin will donate $10,000 to the Missouri Humane Society and Joplin Humane Society, as a way to assist pets that were injured or displaced by the devastating Joplin tornado in May.

The Humane Society has another great investigation into the shady practices of a corporate giant. Not so, says the Humane Society. Some of the breeders were found with sick or dead dogs in their cages. This news story slipped by in November. This time it's Petland, who I'm glad to say has no stores in my area (that I know of.)

Costa Rica being such a small place, one hardly ever seems out of earshot of roads with rumbling trucks and auditory attacking motorcycles, of dogs hell bent on barking into the night, of occasional music being played. Us humans need that habitat too. Part of the problem likely stems from the ambient sounds produced by people.

Russell National Wildlife Refuge , more than a million acres of prairie, badlands, coulees, and the massive Fort Peck Reservoir on the Missouri River. Like the Rockies, though, this is a harsh beauty, not an ideal climate for the human animal by any means. The tussocks are badgers, the stones are grouse until they fails to fly away.

And, Essay #195, “Our Human Values: The Ugly,” describes the standoff between catfish loving Double-crested Cormorants and catfish farmers in the Missouri Valley. I’m not sure if “the Ugly” refers to the cormorant itself or human reaction (catfish farmers are officially allowed to shoot the birds).

Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. Not to be confused with Little Girl, of course.
