THE QUEST FOR THE RAREST OWL OF INDIA

10,000 Birds

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. The Forest Owlet is an endemic species of this mountain range. We don’t really know – if we put aside already well documented habitat destruction. Wait, I think I have seen an owlet shaped leaf.” Let’s go.”.

The Search for the Rarest Owl of India

10,000 Birds

In the end, it was birding that has taken him from his native Serbia, across the Balkans and Turkey, to the very borders of the Old World: East Anglia and Spain, southern Africa and, in the instance of this epic report, India. Out of my total of 15 observations ever, this is only the third within Serbia (the rest were half in India, the other half in Greece).

What’s in a Name: Snipe Hunt

10,000 Birds

Birds of Bolivia: Field Guide–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

Revenge Birding (Shanghai, early June 2022)

10,000 Birds

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.
