He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. The eventual kill is quick, clean, and painless. It's a thoughtful question I wish more people would ask.

Ditto for "never," "always" and other such definitive words. In fairness, I think that what the linguistically lazy are really trying to say is that a little bit of a bad thing isn't going to kill you. But it might kill someone else, as in the case of hot dogs, considering no creature gets out of the hot-dog making process alive.
