I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. One one occasion during my recent visit to Cyprus we came across a GSC walking around on a quiet country road.

As I mined my old birding photos, I recalled one such experience at the Palekhori-Kambi Dam in the eastern part of the Troodos mountain range of Cyprus. It was June 14 in 2008, when we stopped by the dam for a nice walk after lunch with family in the mountains. And the number of House Martins was pretty damn impressive.

This comes from BirdLife Cyprus’ research officer Mike Miltiadou, and shared by Melpo Apostolidou: Waterbirds that bred on the island this year. These are good news as the species has a non favourable conservation status at European level and this is only the second year the species nests in Cyprus.

Of course hybridizations have been reported, and there may or may not be apparent gradations of these descriptions, making identification even tougher in Cyprus where they can all be seen at various times of the year. While there he studied Molecular Biology, then met a Cypriot, got married, and ended up moving with her to Cyprus.

Old World Vultures are nestled within the family Acciptridae along with the hawks and eagles. It’s actually a pretty classic example of convergent evolution, wherein two unrelated families of lifeforms evolve to fill the same niche independently.
