The death of Lonesome George has robbed the world of not only a (sub)species (albeit one that has been functionally extinct for a long time since) but of one of the few celebrity reptiles. The blue head is vivid and distinct enough to look as though it may have come from a whole different species, or planet, than the grass-green body.

Fluttering Shearwater ( Puffinus gavia ) Flesh-footed Shearwater ( Puffinus carneipes ) Buller’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bulleri ) Along with these three were Two further species, also both familiar to North American birders, Sooty Shearwaters and Short-tailed Shearwaters. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island.

Familiar, but beautiful regardless: Blue-headed Parrot Another small parrot species landed on a tree in the distance. It was a Black-headed Parrot , a species that I had meagrely attempted to see in Trinidad once without success. In the distance, Capuchinbirds wailed.

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. Both these tours are for the Little Spotted Kiwi , the smallest species and one now one mainly confined to offshore islands.

The birds were too far away to identify, and I know more than one species does this, but if I had to guess they were starlings. One group is trying to make a better list of which species of birds to pretend to be doing something about vis-a-vis imminent extinction using a unique approach: Identifying the most genetically unique species.

Although work distracts him regularly from the observation of birds, he has managed to see a great many species regardless. While waiting I got offered four dozen eggs (mostly broken), a cow (I’m sure of that), two marriage proposals (less sure) and I learned why every Ugandan can afford a Rolex (it’s a chapati roll with eggs).
