The Latin species name hemilasius (half-hairy or half-shaggy) sounds less like a majestic raptor and more like a neglected hippie – but maybe this is deliberate, which I guess would make the bird a hipster. On Chongming Island, an Upland Buzzard seemed to be almost bemused by being mobbed by a single Oriental Magpie.

Now they’re regularly seen foraging in the weeds along the golf course and soaring overhead with clouds of vultures. I glanced over to my right to see a sleek black and white raptor crest the horizon and dive back down behind a row of trees on a nearby golf course. Nothing spectacular, but solid, enjoyable birding.

And, of course, the wood-warblers. Despite the amount of time spent birding I did not neglect my family at all, enjoying an outing to the Bronx Zoo on Saturday afternoon and a hike at Doodletown Road in Bear Mountain State Park on Sunday. And was it ever!

In the old days, this was par for the course. This last point is a bit legitimate when you look at their impacts on already-stressed species, but in the main, it was more of the kind of disorganized anthropomorphizing that leds to “nature lovers” hating on predators and neglecting the uncharismatic.
