The European Commission said on Wednesday it is pursuing legal action against Portugal for breaching nature protection legislation. The resort falls within a site protected by the Habitats Directive and in the vicinity of a Special Area of Conservation for wild birds (Costa Sudoeste sites). From the Portugal News.

There’s a lot more, of course, and it all makes you wonder if we should have bird feeders or urban green spaces or fountains or windows. Seven cities and one state have enacted legislation and ordinances mandating bird-friendly construction (not a lot, but it’s a start, and NYC and Toronto are on the top of that list).

Of course, I jest a bit in the above paragraph because as a sometime New Jersey birder I have birded the Delaware Bay and seen sights such as the memorable image below, in which thousands of Red Knots, Dunlins, and Short-billed Dowitchers fly up as if connected telepathically. The visual beauty and textual facts are a strong combination.
