In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. On August 13, 2022, I woke up early, snuck out of the hotel room without waking the rest of the family, and was at Seaforth Landing on Mission Bay by 7:00 a.m. They took care of the eBirding too.

But, other people like sitting out there too, even groups of photographers, so claim that seat and make sure to sit right in it or someone might just sit there instead, perhaps even an entire family even if you do have gear set out to supposedly claim the table (this nearly happened to me on a recent visit!). This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. That’s right, I, along with my family and some really good friends, was camping. We spent our days swimming, hiking, playing, and relaxing.

Where a birder goes in the Caribbean determines which birds are seen including toy-like todies, Carib hummingbirds, cool pigeons, quail-doves, unique avian families and outrageous woodpeckers. One such special place is the Centro Manu, a small family run reserve that features several star bird species of Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands.

… Later, on Saturday, in the evening, I was getting the fire built up so we would have enough coals to cook on. As I lay in the tent, drifting off to sleep, the “Who-cooks-for-you?” So take your non-birding family, friends, and acquaintances camping and let them see and hear the natural world through your senses.
