Yes, I know it is getting a bit boring, but the scientific species name of the Rufous-headed Parrotbill, bakeri , honors yet another British ornithologist, Edward Charles Stuart Baker (1864-1944). Specifically, we are all particularly interested in the microbiota of birds living in a mining area.

The day started out with some typical monsoon-season cloudiness, so my first photos suffered a bit from low lighting. But, in comparison with most of my sightings, these Anis looked almost gaudy. But you cannot tell the story of a visit to Paso Ancho without showing its stunning Orange-breasted Bunting.

The condition this bird is suffering from is avian keratin disorder, I believe. Here is a normal-billed Eastern Wood-Pewee for comparison. The bird was unable to close its bill any more than you can see here. The upper mandible appears underdeveloped while the lower mandible looks overgrown.

And this is partly what’s so disappointing about the message of this book: Herzog amasses the research, and sees and does things that involve tremendous suffering and injustice. He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal. You’re right, it is horrible!

They aren’t rare birds by any means, but a leisurely view like this was without comparison. You can view the full list here – I of course forgot to stop the track as per usual, please reassure me and tell me that I’m not the only sufferer of this affliction. More birds may have been added but ultimately they were not.
