Lucky enough for me, living on the Front Range of Colorado , a few large lakes at the base of the foothills make attractive stop over points as lost birds find themselves using the mountains as a guide. Here it is feeding on some fish scraps that were floating on the surface of the lake water.

With Wyoming and South Dakota in our rear view mirror, we look toward Colorado, and a hot spot I have been anxious to visit. I have been a fan of the Kaufman Guides since I bought the Field Guide to Butterflies of North America , for a birds and butterflies trip to Colorado. The Kaufman Field Guide to Nature of New England is the latest addition to the series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (originally called Focus Guides, the name was changed in 2005).
