How much do you know about owls? I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds is a joyous, fascinating read. I don’t think so.

The Northern Spotted Owl is a “ threatened ” species under the U.S. Although most of the threats to the Spotted Owl relate to its dwindling old growth forest habitat, it also faces potential threats from another bird. The Barred Owl has greatly expanded its range, such that it is now common in the Pacific Northwest.

The Moustached Kingfisher was known by only three samples– one female “collected” in the 1920’s, the other two females “collected” in the 1950’s, according to an Audubon Magazine article. And is the amount of knowledge gained anywhere near the amount of knowledge lost by the deliberate killing of this bird?

The Japanese Scops Owl has the same word in its name ( Otus semitorques ), but I could not find an explanation for that either. The other is the Crested Finchbill. The Latin species name is semitorques , which means something like “half-twisted” – but I have no idea why.

There are owls in New York City. Big owls: Barred Owls on Riverside Drive and down the path from Harlem Meer, a Great Horned Owl in Central Park’s Ramble. The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. But–is that it?

The Crested Serpent-eagle is not a vulture, but that does not keep me from mentioning a recent Economist article here, “The sudden demise of Indian vultures killed thousands of people” And while this article is behind a paywall, the original research paper is not. It deserves a lot better than being caught and locked in a cage.

The third in the Nanhui collection of gloriously colored flycatchers is the Blue-and-white Flycatcher. Not surprising then that a pair of Light-vented Bulbuls (photo near the end of this post), when seeing the owl at Nanhui, could not stop complaining about it. It did not seem to bother the owl much though. Oh, the excitement.
