After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.

Sarah Amherst, Countess Amherst (1762–1838) was a British naturalist and botanist who lived in India. William also had connections to both China and Napoleon, but I am too lazy to copy these bits from Wikipedia right now. She was responsible for sending the first of these birds to Britain in 1828. The Beautiful Sibia is one of 11 bird species listed in the HBW with the word “beautiful” in its name. However, the Latin species name is desgodinsi after Auguste Desgodins, a French missionary whose sole claim to fame seems to be that he attempted to enter Tibet in the early 1860s. Nationalism still sucks.

Interestingly, these juveniles look more similar to another species, the Pale-billed Parrotbill, than the adult babblers – and they sometimes are part of the same flock. The Black Kite ( Milvus migrans ) is ubiquitous as a scavenger across the whole of India, often seen by the hundred wheeling over towns. Several, like the mocker and the hummer, were members of families I hadn’t encountered before, either. It was during this period that I took part in a bird race in Kenya, where I saw 290 species in one day, 442 in two. Thus in 48 hours I’d seen more species of birds than most people see in a lifetime in Britain. Fantastic!

The species name athertoni is derived from Lt. Atherton (1797-1827), a naturalist (whatever that means exactly) and a member of the British Army in India. Unfortunately, there is not much literature on the species except for the inevitable analysis of the mitochondrial genome. This is not a putdown, just a statement of fact.
