A World Turned Upside Down

10,000 Birds

I understand there are still people out there who deny human-induced climate change. The former should number at least a hundred thousand individuals each winter, while the latter should be present in the tens of thousands. Mexican Ducks were also present; these are residents in the area, but not normally on this body of water.

Birding Shanghai in March 2023

10,000 Birds

Of course, this factoid should be presented with a photo of a male, not a female rosefinch. In truth, it is present in many parts of China (not mentioned) but not really in Tibet. I am not sure how it is in male opera singers – do older singers sing longer? Alas, it seems they were already gone from Tianmashan in March.

Honey, I Shrunk The Dinosaurs!

10,000 Birds

J. J. C. Smart on the Moral Elite

Animal Ethics

This last implies of course an improvement in ethics, as opposed to morality, as I have defined it, unless we already understand 'Do as you would be done by' as applicable to whales, cattle, chickens, and so on, as it is to human beings. I am myself not so heroic. I eat eggs though they may come from battery hens.

Henry S. Salt (1851-1939) on the Wastefulness of Meat-Eating

Animal Ethics

It seems, generally speaking, that the foods which are the costliest in suffering are also the costliest in price, whereas the wholesome and harmless diet to which Nature points us is at once the cheapest and most humane.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 11 of 13

Animal Ethics

The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve.

Birding Tiaozini again – sponsored by the local government …

10,000 Birds

Of course, Tiaozini also has Cattle Egret … … and the usually somewhat depressed looking Black-crowned Night Heron. In contrast, the Common Terns present look much more elegant. I guess looking elegant during sex is difficult for most humans, too. Much better than some fiddly spoon-billed sandpipers.
