In keeping with high diversity in other aspects of the avian kingdom, including falcons and excluding owls, this small country has a raptor list that tops fifty species. While there’s a lot of protected habitat, with so many other raptors and birds to compete with, each species has a pretty small population.

Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

Little Blue and Tricolored Herons , Snowy , Great , and Cattle Egrets , a Laughing Falcon , Black Vultures, Blue-winged Teal , a Wood Stork , a nesting tree of Montezuma Oropendulas , and Ruddy Ground-Doves were just some of the species we saw on our short train ride into the refuge.

The potential for contagion through clicking on links has long been acknowledged and with a desire to protect our precious readers, the links have been discontinued. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis). The program has been successful enough that some of the birds have been released back into protected areas in California, Arizona, and across the border in Baja, but the species is still far from out of the woods. The need to travel long distances to seek out dead things necessitates some impressive aerial skills. Old Wold Vultures.

And unlike the protection of cormorants, which was perceived as a problem, protection of pelicans was welcomed by the local communities. Nikos managed to show us the incubating Cattle Egrets, of which only 2 or 3 pairs breed in this enormous heronry, counting up to 9000 pairs back in 2014. I’m in Greece, after all.

Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations. Hope for a vagrant comes in the form of an Orange-breasted Falcon sighting from west-central Panama.
