In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 2

The Large-billed Crow ( video ) is one of the natural enemies – in the study above, it predated 19 eggs from four pitta nests. Different from many other parasitic cuckoos, the chick typically does not kill all its nest mates, though one or two of them may die from starvation. I hope he is right.

It seems that at Nanhui, somebody is trying to kill even more than 2 bird(s) (species) with one stone (to be more accurate, not a single stone but a massive amount of concrete). According to the HBW, “only female incubates and cares for young … [while] males leave during [the] incubation period” Right on, sharpies!

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Apparently, after a male first mates with a female, he throws out the first one or two eggs she lays in their nest.

Yet, in 1990s India has killed more than 99% of its Gyps vultures (e.g. Of the estimated 500 million cattle in India, only 4% were destined for consumption by humans as meat. One large banyan fig as well as all bushes around were completely covered with flies and their eggs – every inch. Not for the same reason, although.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. I imagined walking right up to them. High Island in April requires Weather, so I was told. American Avocets.
