The Magpie Geese have dispersed from the previous area they were in, because it got too wet. Wedge-tailed Eagle -bigger than the cattle!? We also found our first Pink-eared Ducks for 2021 and also Red-kneed Dotterels. Magpie Geese on the move. This bird species is known to travel large distances around Australia.

Munkajarra Wetlands is always a good location for the various duck species and you can expect to observe Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Pacific Black Ducks , Hardheads , Grey Teal and sometimes Radjah Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks. Birding Kununurra late in the year

Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. All of the nice green vegetation around these drainage channels is very popular with the Cattle Egrets and by November they have some beautiful breeding plumage.

There are no longer any Green Pygmy-geese , but there are over one thousand Magpie Geese. In fact there are so many Magpie Geese it does make it hard to establish what else is present. Magpie Geese. A Gathering at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Colusa NWR was beginning to fill its impoundments during this drought, and there were quite a few ducks and geese present. There were not only Cattle Egrets and Great Egrets ( Ardea alba ) but Snowy Egrets ( Egretta thula ) as well. Click on photos for full sized images.

Serbia – birding overview of a year in the Central Balkans

Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , as well as Goosanders (aka Common Mergansers) at mountain reservoirs – they are all busy nesting. In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s. With cold spells comes the rare Long-tailed Duck. In winter, Jack Snipes join Common Snipes.

Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. Hippo and attending Cattle Egret. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists. Yellow-billed Stork.
