Of course, I contacted Carlos Sanchez , alleged south Florida birder extraordinaire, to maximize the returns on what time I could spend. From the bulbuls we went in search of another introduced species that has taken to south Florida like home. Let me get out of the car before making me look at birds! What is it with this guy?

Mandarin Duck, Central Park, NYS. It is very possible that Mike and Corey will penalize me for including the Mandarin Duck–also known as the “Hot Duck,” “Mandy” only to tourists and the Gothamist–in this list, but its celebrity cannot be ignored. Everybody wants to know about the Hot Duck.

In early May, I reluctantly accepted my parental obligation to bring my children to Orlando, Florida. At least, thought I, Florida would produce some superior birds. Orlando, Florida is an ecological blight. The Magic Kingdom featured Donald, Daisy, and a few Mallards … we all know how much Disney likes ducks!

The most famous of these is Cattle Egret , but Masked Duck looked like it might make things interesting for a while and Antillean Nighthawk has more or less staked out a little niche for itself in extreme southern Florida. But as soon as I stepped out of the car, I could not one, but two Cattle Tyrants preening in the trees.
