It was more than 50 years before I was to see another lynx, not in the Doñana, but in the Sierra Morena mountains to the north, which is now the best place to see these handsome cats in the wild. A Greek Wild Cat , photographed near Lake Kerkini I’ve had a few encounters with wild cats, too, in both France and Greece.

My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. While my cats like the taste of the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo , they tend to look fairly ridiculous eating them, as the racket tail sticks out of their mouth. I agree that they look toxic, particularly the females. Even the scientific species name is igneus , identical to the English name.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. They don’t build nests and some like Great Horned Owls take over old hawk or squirrel nests. That is probably one of the adults.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. ” Blue-bearded Bee-eaters seem to have a pretty clever hunting strategy. One of my cats claims that the males taste better than the females (“too sour”), but then that cat has told me many lies before – I still think it more likely it has never eaten any minivet in its life. A giant squirrel, actually.

Mount Kinabalu is an astonishing hot spot of biodiversity and held huge amounts of interest for people interested in plants and insects – it’s also really good for squirrels. The truly lucky might see Bornean Clouded Leopards or the endemic Flat-faced Cat at night. Think of the Jungle Ride at Disney. Danum Valley.
