Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. The cats were eradicated by 1991, which left the mice population to go unchecked.

Shoving a cat in a bin. For being a girl that beat a guy in a computer game. For being a feminist with an opinion on comic books, or games. The story with Cecil was something of an exception, but the universe didn’t disappoint and sure enough the latest hunter outrage story today is, predictably, about a woman hunter.

Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! There is no solidarity among the big cats. I guess the natural question is… how does some hunter from the US help in the conservation of the lion? Take the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania.

Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Rattlesnakes are fair game, as are other reptiles, scorpions, frogs, birds, and insects. Car collisions, feral cats, and run-ins with hunters also cause problems, even for this speed-racer. These ground birds have been clocked going 20 mph, though their coyote predators can go more than twice that.

Originally a hunting term, the Big Five were the most dangerous and prized targets of the great white hunters on safari. Seekers of the game-viewing Big Five have more recently relaxed their criteria and generally either Black or White Rhino is counted as a member of the Big Five. They live for up to 100 years.
