From the campaign website : (Nov. 4, 2008) – Voters in California approved an historic ballot measure to halt the inhumane confinement of animals on factory farms by an overwhelming margin. on Prop 2 campaign. Prop 2 requires that factory farms provide enough space for animals to stand up, turn around and extend their limbs.

I got curious today and googled "Jennifer Fearing," the woman who led the Yes on Proposition 2 campaign. Tags: proposition 2 california humane society farm animal welfare. It turns out that she was the former Humane Society Chief Economist. Pretty impressive bio (please note that the bio is from her time at HSUS).

Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? The norm of moderate concern for animals - that animals matter albeit less than humans - permits the (ab)use of animals in vivisection, factory farming, bloodsports and other contexts where animals suffer. Parker uses the term "anti-modern farming activists," which is new to me. They do appear to wish to put an end to what they believe are the worst abuses of institutionalized animal agriculture, such as gestation crates and veal crates, but that's hardly a call to end animal agriculture. The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting !

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. It isn't true that animals on farms would be in the wild otherwise.
