Scaly-breasted Munia , formerly Nutmeg Mannikan, is supposed to be easy to find in southern California in late August (just check the eBird graphs), but the established exotic had eluded me till Catherine Hamilton and Luke Tiller invited me to bird their small Pasadena neighborhood park. It was 7:04am when we saw our target bird.

I first encountered Molly Hashimoto’s bird art in California. On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. Dabbling ducks, diving ducks, grebes, woodpeckers, shorebirds, waders, songbirds, raptors, flycatchers, hummingbirds: this gem of a sanctuary has it all!

Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. Permission to use the car was obtained from the brother-in-law and permission to be missing until 10 AM was obtained from Daisy.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?
