Birding Southeastern Washington (McNary NWR)

The most popular of the ten eBird hotspots is McNary NWR–Headquarters/Quail Trail , which does indeed feature California Quail , as well as Yellow-Headed Blackbirds and numerous other species. Along the way, Marsh Wrens flitted in the cattails, Caspian Terns noisily passed overhead, and an Osprey hunted over the water.

My 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count

There were California Scrub-Jays gathering up as many sunflower seeds as they could hold in their beaks… and Spotted Towhees who would occasionally perch up in the trees waiting their turn. Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond!

Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

The Queens List Won’t Stop Growing

It was hunting around the edges of the West Pond of Jamaica Bay back at the beginning of March, a day that I saw both the individual in Queens and one in Brooklyn. They bred on a number of islands near Japan and Taiwan, and ranged widely and abundantly from the Aleutian Islands south through California. Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. Brown Pelicans are not an unusual sight on the California coast.
