I also spent a week in northwestern Costa Rica on a family vacation, a long weekend in Barbados, a week in Georgia, and two week-plus-long trips to visit relatives in southern California. For fifteen years, ever since I started visiting California as a birder, I’ve been hoping to see a Mountain Plover.

The Cherokee nation called them “Peace Eagles” owing to the fact that they never killed a living thing – and also that they tended to show up in numbers after battled when peace treaties were being signed, though admittedly that may have been for a slightly more macabre reason. Scaly-breasted Munia , formerly Nutmeg Mannikan, is supposed to be easy to find in southern California in late August (just check the eBird graphs), but the established exotic had eluded me till Catherine Hamilton and Luke Tiller invited me to bird their small Pasadena neighborhood park. Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. There were, however, several rarities around that would get me to 500 birds. Binoculars up into the dark and wet and YES!

That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. There’s an imperative to get this message across to cat people who, like me, can be educated to value wild lives as much as we value the lives of our four-legged family members.

I should add that the Big Owls taking over NYC social and even hard print media, dominating conversations with my nonbirder friends and family, are not the only owls in the five boroughs, but like a musical, the closer you are to Broadway, the closer you are to fame and fortune (and maybe even a higher quality rodent for dinner, who knows?).
