Childhood memories flooded back in, and I began my search for the poor victims of this bird, so lovingly nicknamed “The Butcher Bird” Nothing was found, not a grasshopper, lizard, nothing. Shrikes by the numbers: The family Laniidae is composed of 31 species of shrike, around the globe. Sometimes reality is so unfair!

This is what we need for birds, whose rights as government-protected species are violated every day by free-roaming cats. Neighbor A’s private property and peace of mind are both suffering because of the cats, which are killing government-protected species. You call the SWAT team. What birds need is their own SWAT team.

The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). And it does not even live in reeds.

It is a common bird itself but I had never managed to see one so well even though I butchered the photographic opportunity. After the hawk the species piled up fast, with a flyover Black-headed Trogon , Pale-vented Pigeons , Olive-throated Parakeets , and wide variety of other species showing themselves.

We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. I say they were butchered, face-off. Will the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) conference delegates up-list them to Appendix I of the Convention, forbidding any future sale over international borders?

The avifauna is distinctly Caribbean as well, with some Caribbean species found only on the islands and nowhere else in Honduras. Well, it’s a life bird if you consider Salvin’s Emerald a separate species. I don’t know how I managed to completely butcher all of my shots of what was essentially a stationary subject.
