What’s in a Name?

10,000 Birds

Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds. There are not, as far as I know, any plans to re-name the Montagu’s Harrier, a bird that’s now a real rarity in the UK that only occasionally breeds here. Eleonora’s Falcons still breed on Sardinia today. There are relatively few European birds named after women.

Birding the Ndumo area, South Africa

10,000 Birds

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Banded Semipalmated Sandpipers at Big Egg Marsh, Queens, New York

10,000 Birds

Now that passerine migration has largely wound down the attention of this New York birder has shifted to seabirds, shorebirds, and the occasional trip looking for breeding birds. The European Christmas Bird Count

10,000 Birds

These globally threatened raptors breed from Ukraine eastward through Siberia and only a few come to overwinter here. Here in Serbia, in the south of the continent, this species is a proper rarity. The first idea was, it is probably wounded by poachers. The biggest count ever was less than 10 birds in the whole of Serbia.

A September shoreline

10,000 Birds

Sadly it has been a poor season so far and the Pied Oystercatchers are currently on their second attempt at breeding. Most of these birds had significant breeding plumage and had most likely only recently returned to the Broome area. This week we had large tides and there were several large flocks on Cable Beach.
