I settled on Wisconsin, which is home to one of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding that I have not visited: Horicon NWR. However, I had never actually visited a WPA, and Wisconsin has several relatively close to Horicon NWR. Now that I can travel, I have perversely discovered the charms of really working over one spot of habitat across the seasons and the years; as such I’m on a mission to find 100 species of bird in Socrates Sculpture Park, a bit of Queens between the East River and Vernon Boulevard where artists create open-air displays. It is easy to tell when some species become extinct — a Martha or a Lonesome George dies and there are no more, not now, not ever (until science fiction kicks in.) ” that leads to comments like “…my wife and I observed what I could swear is that exact bird two days ago, on a pond in NE Wisconsin!”

The potholes and associated grasslands create North America’s most productive habitat for breeding waterfowl, making it an area of global significance for Mallards , Northern Pintails , Blue-winged Teals , Gadwalls , Northern Shovelers , and others. But taken as a whole, WPAs total almost 3.8 million acres.

The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

I think the main reason turkey/vehicle collisions are more noticeable this time of year are breeding hormones. Wild Turkeys were a species of concern in the 20th Century and several reintroduction programs were tried, including the release of domestic turkeys (that didn’t work so well). Is this turkey contemplating your doom?

I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. Here in Colorado many species are affected, but perhaps none more than our beautiful Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks.
