Nashville Warbler ( Oreothlypis ruficapilla ridgwayi ) photos by Larry Jordan I have been enjoying some first time visitors to my yard this fall, including several warblers, one of which is the western Nashville Warbler ( Oreothlypis ruficapilla ridgwayi ). Here’s a short video of the Nashville Warbler taking that bath.

Niagara Falls State Park, right above the cataracts, is where I used to bike to on May days to see dozens of fantastic chestnut Bay-breasted Warblers whispering from the canopy, American Redstarts and Tennessee Warblers and Nashville Warblers filling the woods with song.

There is believed to be a very small breeding population of Mississippi Kites that occupy a small area that borders Pima and Cochise Counties. Lots of warblers were found, including Grace’s, Nashville, Virginia, Red-faced, Hermit, Lucy’s and Wilson’s. Here is that Red-necked Phalarope.

Naming a bird species for the part of the world in which it breeds or resides makes sense. Even Canada Warbler (which should really be rechristened Necklaced Warbler ) breeds almost entirely in Canada, which is far more than can be said for the Canada Goose ! I love Nashville Warblers from every angle. NAMED FOR PLACES.

Common migratory visitors include Warbling Vireos , Hooded Orioles , and Yellow-rumped , Wilson’s , Nashville , Orange-crowned , and Black-throated Gray Warblers. A male Indigo Bunting , now in his brilliant blue breeding plumage, makes an equally brief visit. I wrote about these regulars previously, here.).

Even though the overall breeding range remains largely unchanged from that in the 1940′s, the entire coastal population has been in recent severe decline. By only driving four hours to the south, birders can easily double that figure with species like Cape May , Wilson’s , and Nashville Warbler – and there are always surprises such as a wintering Blue-winged or Hooded Warbler. Many visitors who come through Orlando or Tampa see maybe eight or ten species on a winter trip.
